About this tool
Applications and personal statements almost always come with a character limit. This tool counts what you paste in, giving the total both with and without spaces, along with the number of words, lines and paragraphs.
It also counts bytes. A Korean syllable takes three bytes in UTF-8 and two in EUC-KR, so the same text produces different numbers depending on the encoding. That matters when you are filling a field on an older message board or a database column whose limit is expressed in bytes rather than characters.
Characters are counted the way a person sees them: an emoji or a Korean syllable assembled from separate components counts as one character even though it is several units internally. Do check the rules where you are submitting, though — most Korean institutions count with spaces included, but not all of them do. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
